City of LAGUNA WOODS

     The city of Laguna Woods is located in south Orange County, just six miles from the coast.  It is one of California's newest and oldest cities.  It incorporated in 1999, and average age of its residents if 78. It is one of the county's smallest cities in land area- 4 square miles.
     Ninety percent of the city's 4 square miles is contained in the senior-citizen gated community of Laguna Woods Village.  The balance of the city contains four additional senior residential communities and several thriving commercial centers.
     Development of this area begain in the 1960s on 2,095 acres formerly known as the Moulton Ranch.  It was designed to offer a full range of cultural and recreational experiences for active adults in a safe and garden-like setting.
     Nowadays, Laguna Woods is a general-law city operating with a council/manager form of government that blends five elected City Council representatives who set policies and adopt local laws, and a city manager and team of professional staff members and consultants who carry out the laws.
     Two of Laguna Woods' current council members - Brenda Ross and Bert Hack - have served the city since incorporation, as has its city manager, Leslie Keane.
     Laguna Woods offers many entertainment options and leisure activities, including A Place for Paws, the city's dog park on Ridge Route Drive at Peralta Drive, and a taxi voucher program that provides reduced-fare trips to John Wayne Airport, medical offices and other locations around Orange County.
